UAF Launches Nationwide Effort to Restore Rural Telephony Services

In a continued effort to enhance telecommunications infrastructure across Liberia, the Universal Access Fund (UAF) has embarked on a nationwide tour aimed at restoring nonfunctional telecom towers. The team recently visited Sayeh District #2 in Grand Bassa County, following earlier assessments in Bomi and Grand Cape Mount counties.

The tour is part of a broader initiative by the UAF to identify and rehabilitate damaged or inactive towers in underserved and unserved areas, ensuring that all Liberians have equitable access to communication services. Communities in Sayeh, Mana Gorduah, and Mecca expressed optimism about the visit, as many have long struggled with poor or nonexistent network coverage.

According to UAF officials, restoring these towers will not only improve mobile phone connectivity but also strengthen access to emergency services, mobile banking, education platforms, and government information.

This is about bridging the digital divide, the acting commissioner of UAF hon. Patrick Honnah stated during the visit. “Access to reliable telecommunications is a right, not a privilege.”

Local leaders praised the initiative, emphasizing its potential to spur development, boost local economies, and connect residents to broader opportunities.

The Universal Access Fund is expected to continue its assessment tour in other regions in the coming weeks, with plans to begin restoration works shortly after.
